Is there a Teacup or Minature Yorkie?
Yorkies have become one of the most popular breeds according to the American Kennel Club Registry. This popularity is having a negative impact on the breed because poor quality puppies are being offered for sale from questionable sources such as brokers, puppy mills and sellers importing puppies from South American puppy mills.
People are also using terms such as Teacup Yorkies and Minature Yorkies to exploit the breed, making it sound as though these dogs are a type of Yorkie. This is not true!
Teacup or Minature Yorkies do not exist as a breed and shouldn’t ever be advertised as such. Beware of breeders who use this terminology.

What is Hypoglycemia?
Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar can be caused by stress, improper diet or a missed meal, being chilled, or using too much energy during the day by playing too long at one time. Puppies commonly affected are the toy breeds at 6 – 12 weeks of age. The liver stores energy, but small puppies cannot store enough energy for long periods, especially with additional stress factors. Signs of hypoglycemia can be as slight as a depressed attitude or as serious as finding your puppy in a coma. Treatment can be as easy as giving small amounts of Karo Syrup, Nutracal, or honey and water for a mild case. For more serious cases, a trip to the veterinarian is necessary. Repeated episodes can lead to more severe complications.

Should I Spay or Neuter my Yorkie?
There are a dozen excellent reasons for pets to be altered and I cannot think of one good reason not to do it. Leaving a pet Yorkie intact can cause serious life threating conditions, such as mammary tumors and pyometra.
Speak with your vet about the benefits of alterations. You may have your Yorkie for additional years because you did.

How can I house train my Yorkie?
Yorkies can be difficult to house train. The kidneys are not fully developed in the young yorkie, so don’t get too upset about accidents. How serious you should be about your training is going to depend largely on the time of year and the age of the yorkie. I usually say not to expect too  much from them until they are around 5-6 months. They can be trained prior, but it will take constant supervision. It is important not to let the new yorkie have full range of the house at first. Gate off the kitchen or laundry room, if at all possible, and pick up any rugs. In the area you are keeping the yorkie, you should either place papers in a small area or plastic backed pads. Training yorkies to use both the outdoors and pads is advantageous if you travel with your yorkie. I have always told people to use the reward system for training. You need to take them out often, especially after eating and naps. Don’t wait for more than 5-10 minutes. After they have relieved themselves, reward them with a bite of something they love and praise them. There’s also a crate method of training. Most people cannot stand leaving the puppy in a crate and releasing them only for short periods of time to go outdoors. The method you use will depend on you lifestyle, schedule, and of course your yorkie.

What should I feed my Yorkie?
The diet of a yorkie puppy should consist of a premium dry dog food made especially for the growing stage your yorkie is in. This is not the area to cut corners. Proper diet will affect overall health in adulthood. You don’t need this yorkie to have deficiences from the start. Improper diet could cause weak muscle tone and prevent the skeletal system from developing properly. Become a label reader for your yorkie andmake sure that the ingredients are USDA-inspected.Mmake sure your yorkie is fed three times a day, with at least two meals being dry ration. If you’re giving your yorkie milk bone treats, one of them is like a meal so you can’t expect them to also eat a full ration of dry at the same time. Keep treats to a minimal, remember that a tablespoon of something to them is a good sized treat. My yorkies love all types of vegetables and also many fruits. Even those are kept at a minimal. A bite or two will keep them happy. Too many treats will also throw off the balanced diet they need and should be getting from their regular diet.

Should I check my Yorkies teeth?
Yorkies have a tendency to retain their puppy teeth, especially canines. At around 5 months of age you should start to watch the teeth closely. A perfect bite may go off in a matter of days. You may feel it’s not important for a correct scissor bite, but this is the first step of the digestion process and proper chewing is important. The other importance is that the proper bite stays clean. Overlapping misaligned teeth are a good source for bacteria and tartar to build rapidly.

Should I give my Yorkie chew treats?
A word of caution about chew treats. Make sure if you do give rawhide that you replace them often. Many yorkies have gotten them caught in their throats, which means a fast trip to the vet or worse. As a yorkie chews them, they soften and the pup is able to get small pieces off. As they wear down the size, the possibility of an accident is more likely. I know your yorkie loves them, but is it worth the risk?

Scam Alert information
Please beware of scam artists. They usually type emails in lower case and do not have a good knowledge and usage of the English languauge. Be sure you are buying from a reputable breeder. Ask for pedigrees and information about the parents of the puppy your interested in. Ask for testimonals or references.
Never give out your personal or bank information to anyone. Beware of relay calls. Beware of someone who is trying to give away a puppy if you will pay the shipping. If it sounds too good to be true, it is!
If you are selling something, beware of fraudulent money orders, cashiers checks, and personal checks. Scam artists exploit the internet! Never ship anything until all the money has cleared the bank. Beware of scam artists who want to send someone by to pick the animal and leave you a money order or cashiers check. They sometimes will bring one for more than the purchase price and want you to give them the difference in cash. Then they have your animal, you have a bad check that is worthless and you are also out the money that you gave them back.

Does a female or male Yorkie Puppy make a better pet?

I think that both make excellent pets. The male puppies often  get passed over because they mark urine. That problem can be easily solved by neuturing the puppy as soon as your vet says that it is safe to do it. So many times people leave a male dog intact and when they reach sexual maturity they mark everything. If we have the puppy fixed before he starts marking, we will not have that problem. I think male puppies are more well-rounded with beautiful, loving personalities. Female puppies can be really moody. Female puppies should be spayed as soon as possible, if you are not planning on breeding them. People ask me about breeding their little girls and I always say, If you do not want to lose her, do not breed her!
